Take Some Time Off for the Holidays

It’s time for my annual holiday reminder (although you’ll hear me say it at other times of the year as well) about the importance of taking time off as a trader and even as an investor. It is just healthy to do so. The holidays are crazy for most people, and many would say the market has been crazy too. But even if things are not so crazy market or holiday-wise, time off for a trader is imperative.

Time Off Is Healthy

It’s not just that trading can be really stressful. Time away from anything we do in life (even if it is good for us) is just plain healthy. It’s time to reflect on the good and the bad. It also gives us a chance to review previous trades and to start work on or adjust our trading plans. How great is that?

Mind in the Game

I often tell traders they don’t need to be watching the market all day long to trade. But when there are other things going on, like during the holidays, it can cloud our judgment as disciplined traders. As a trader or investor, your mind has to be in the game. If you have an especially hectic schedule for whatever reason, how likely are you to make sound decisions and be profitable? The answer most likely is not very.

Do Yourself a Favor

No matter how your trading is going, it’s necessary to take some time off once in a while. When there is the extra craziness the holidays can bring, focus instead on what is really important in life, which is family, friends and your faith. Enjoy the season!
